The dried seeds of Trigonella foenum graceum used for the study were procured locally. They were successively extracted with ethanol. The therapeutic dose of the extract was calculated after carrying acute oral toxicity studies in rats. Extract was tested for their anti diabetic activity in alloxan induced diabetic rats. These parameters were assessed for Fasting blood glucose levels at 7th, 14thand 21stday in alloxan induced rats. Oral glucose tolerance test was done on 8th, 15th and 22nd day in alloxan induced rats.Ethanolic extracts of trigonella foenum graceum seeds (100 and 200 mg/kg) showed significant effect in blood glucose lowering activity and improved the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in short term (7th day) and long term (14th day and 21st day) repeated administration in alloxan induced diabetic rats. The above studies showed that ethanolic extract of Trigonella foenum graceum seeds produces potent anti-diabetic activity on repeated administration and also showed the anti bacterial activity the by inhibiting the growth of E.coli.
