Abstract

Traditional medicine or folk medicine practices are based on the use of plants and plant extracts. Standardization and phytochemical investigation of the extract plays a very important role in determining the active constituents and relative purity. The objective of the present study is to investigate the phytochemical constituents, along with antioxidant evaluation and standardization of nelumbo nucifera. The phytochemical investigation was done by detecting the presence of carbohydrates, proteins, tannins and alkaloids through successive extraction process. The parameters like microscopy, macroscopy, ash value and loss on drying were determined intended for the standardization process. The antioxidant evaluation was evaluated deterrming the DPPH scavenging activity, total phenolic content and β catotene assay. The chromatographic (TLC) profiles were developed utilizing different solvent systems. The total phenolic content were estimated for methenolic & ethenolic extract (26.83±0.098, 18.26±1.44) respectively. . b-Carotene linolic acid bleaching assay showed methenolic extract (30.01±0.420) and ethonolic extract (20.28±0.88).
